Prosecutors in Los Angeles have charged a 32-year-old man in connection with the deaths of his parents, film director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The charges include a special circumstance allegation involving multiple victims, which could allow for a sentence of life imprisonment without parole if he is convicted.
Authorities said the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence earlier this week. Investigators reported that both victims had sustained multiple stab wounds. Prosecutors have also alleged that a knife was used in the killings.
Hochman said no final decision has been made on whether the prosecution will seek the death penalty. Nick Reiner is expected to formally appear in court and enter a plea once he has been medically cleared by prison officials.
Los Angeles police described the case as deeply tragic. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said the incident has affected not only the family involved but also the wider community.
Rob Reiner is known for directing several well-known films across different genres, including This Is Spinal Tap, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Michele Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and founded the photography and production company Reiner Light.
Officials said autopsy results are pending and will determine the exact cause and timing of the deaths. Further details are expected to be presented during court proceedings.
