Miss Finland Dethroned After Viral Photo Sparks Racism Controversy

Finland’s former Miss Universe representative has come under heavy criticism after a social media photo sparked an international debate on racism and cultural sensitivity.

The controversy began after a photo surfaced online showing Miss Finland delegate Sarah Dzafce making a gesture that many viewers interpreted as mocking East Asian features. The image, which was shared during the Miss Universe event held in Thailand, quickly went viral across multiple countries, including Japan, South Korea and China.

The post was widely criticised for being offensive, prompting strong reactions on social media. Following the backlash, Dzafce was stripped of her Miss Finland title by the national organising body.

In response, Dzafce said the gesture was misunderstood and claimed it was linked to discomfort during a meal. She also stated that the caption accompanying the photo was added by someone else without her approval. She later issued a public apology, saying she never intended to insult anyone and stressed the importance of respect across cultures.

Despite the apology, criticism continued, with some questioning its sincerity and reach, as it was posted only in Finnish. The issue soon extended beyond the beauty pageant, drawing attention from political leaders and major companies.

Finland’s Prime Minister condemned the gesture and said the controversy had harmed the country’s international image. Meanwhile, two Finnish lawmakers faced backlash after posting images that appeared to mock the situation, later deleting the posts and issuing apologies.

Finnair, Finland’s national airline, also responded after calls for boycotts emerged online. The airline clarified that it does not support discrimination and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and respect for people from all backgrounds.

The incident has renewed discussions about racism and cultural awareness in Finland. Advocacy groups and individuals in East Asia have called for stronger action against discrimination, while Finland’s diplomatic missions have acknowledged the concerns raised by international audiences.

The Miss Finland Organisation said the decision to remove Dzafce from her title was difficult but necessary, adding that those holding public roles must demonstrate respect and responsibility at all times.
