One person was killed and five others were injured after a gunman opened fire at multiple locations in central Israel on Sunday, authorities said.
According to Israel’s emergency service Magen David Adom, a man in his mid-30s died from gunshot wounds. Two of the injured victims were reported to be in serious condition, while three others suffered moderate injuries.
Israeli police said the attacker, identified as an Arab citizen of Israel, carried out the shooting from a vehicle before fleeing the scene. Security forces later tracked him down near Kokhav Yair, close to the occupied West Bank.
The suspect was killed following a brief pursuit, and authorities said they recovered both the firearm and the vehicle allegedly used in the attack.
Police Commissioner Danny Levy said the suspect had a criminal record. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and possible motives.
A second suspect was later arrested after allegedly making statements suggesting involvement in the shooting. Police said the individual also attempted to assault officers during the arrest.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, describing it as a terrorist act and expressing condolences to the victim’s family.
Meanwhile, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for strict measures against attackers and referenced Israel’s ongoing debate over capital punishment for those convicted of deadly terrorist attacks.
Following the incident, Israeli security forces increased their presence in the area and imposed additional security measures around parts of the West Bank. Palestinian sources reported that checkpoints near Tulkarem and Qalqilya were temporarily closed or reinforced.
The shooting comes amid continuing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, with security concerns remaining high across the region.
