Three Killed in Smoke Device and Knife Attack at Taiwan Metro Stations

At least three people were killed and several others injured after violent incidents involving smoke devices and a knife at metro stations in Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, on Friday, officials confirmed.

The attacks took place at Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Station. Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai described the incidents as a “deliberate act,” though authorities have not yet confirmed a motive.

According to officials, the suspect, who was wearing a mask, allegedly threw multiple smoke-producing devices at Taipei Main Station, causing panic among commuters. Emergency services later confirmed that a total of four people died, including the suspect, while five others were injured.

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said one of the victims lost their life while attempting to stop the attack at the main station. The mayor also stated that the suspect later died after jumping from a building in an apparent attempt to avoid arrest.

Authorities reported that some victims suffered injuries related to sharp objects and physical impact. Security forces were quickly deployed, and emergency responders worked to clear the affected areas.

In response, officials increased security across the island. Key locations such as metro stations, railway hubs, highways and airports were placed on high alert.

Images released by local media showed emergency crews examining objects left at the scene, while videos on social media captured thick smoke filling parts of an underground station as commuters kept their distance.

President Lai Ching-te said the government would thoroughly investigate the incident and take all necessary measures to ensure public safety.

Violent crime is uncommon in Taiwan. However, the incident revived memories of a 2014 attack on Taipei’s metro system that deeply shocked the nation.
