Liverpool Victory Parade Attack: Driver Admits Deliberately Ploughing Car into Crowd – Breaks Down in Court

Liverpool: The man accused of deliberately driving his car into crowds during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade has finally admitted his crime in court, breaking down in tears as he changed his plea.

The suspect, identified as Paul Doyle, had initially denied 31 serious criminal charges, including causing grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, and assault during the parade celebrations earlier this year. After months of refusing responsibility, he stunned the courtroom on Wednesday by pleading “guilty” to the majority of the charges.

Plea Dramatically Changed in Court

During the celebrations, tens of thousands of supporters had gathered in Liverpool city centre to mark the club’s Premier League triumph. Despite road closures and heavy security, Doyle allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon, targeting the crowd.

When he appeared in court this week, the 54-year-old unexpectedly changed his plea. Emotional and visibly shaken, Doyle stood wearing a suit and glasses, crying and staring at the floor as he repeatedly answered “guilty” in a trembling voice to multiple charges.

Victims Included Babies and Children

According to Merseyside Police, 134 people were injured in the incident — including babies, children, and adults. Officials described the act as intentional, stating that Doyle had “weaponised his vehicle” and deliberately drove into the tightly packed parade.

Sentencing Next Month

Judge Andrew Menary KC confirmed that sentencing will take place over two days starting 15 December. He warned Doyle to prepare for a custodial sentence, noting that some of the charges carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Doyle, a father of three, has remained in custody since his arrest and will continue to be held until sentencing.
