Indian-Origin Woman Found Dead in Maryland; Former Boyfriend Charged

The death of a 27-year-old Indian-origin woman in the US state of Maryland has prompted a police investigation and drawn attention from Indian diplomatic officials.

Nikita Godishala was found dead inside an apartment in Maryland on 3 January, a day after her former boyfriend reported her missing, according to local authorities. Police said her body showed multiple stab wounds.

The missing person report had been filed on 2 January by Arjun Sharma, who told police he had last seen Ms Godishala on New Year’s Eve at his apartment in the city. Investigators later recovered her body from the same residence.

Murder Charges Filed

US police say evidence suggests the killing took place sometime after 7pm on 31 December. Arjun Sharma has since been charged with first- and second-degree murder.

Authorities said Mr Sharma travelled to India shortly after filing the missing person report. It remains unclear when he will be brought back to the US to face legal proceedings.

Police have not released further details about the motive, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Indian Embassy Responds

The Indian Embassy in the United States confirmed it is in contact with Ms Godishala’s family and is coordinating with local authorities.

In a statement shared on social media, the embassy said it was providing all possible assistance to the family and closely following developments in the case.
