Deadly Fire Breaks Out at New Year Celebration in Switzerland’s Crans-Montana

Several people were killed and many others injured after a fire and explosion struck a crowded bar during New Year’s celebrations at a luxury Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on January 1 at Le Constellation, a popular lounge bar in Crans-Montana, located in the canton of Valais (Wallis). Authorities said the venue was packed with New Year revellers, with around 100 people inside when the blast and subsequent fire broke out.

Valais police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed multiple fatalities and injuries but said exact numbers had not yet been determined. He described the incident as an explosion of unknown origin, followed by a major fire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the building. Images published by Swiss media showed firefighters battling the blaze while medical teams treated victims nearby. The area surrounding the bar was immediately sealed off, and police imposed a temporary no-fly zone over Crans-Montana to allow emergency operations.

Authorities have set up a reception centre and helpline to assist affected families and tourists. Lathion said investigators are still in the early stages of determining what caused the explosion and fire.

“This is an internationally renowned ski resort with many visitors, especially during the holiday period,” he said, adding that the investigation would take time.

The BBC and other international media outlets also reported the incident, citing Swiss police sources.

A joint press conference involving police and the canton’s public prosecutor is scheduled for 10 a.m. local time, where officials are expected to provide further details.

Crans-Montana is a high-end ski destination in the district of Sierre, located about 40 kilometres north of the Matterhorn. Authorities said updates will be released as more information becomes available.
