Dashcam Footage Shows Couple Trying to Stop Gunman Before Losing Lives in Bondi Attack
Newly surfaced dashcam footage has revealed the brave actions of a couple who attempted to stop an armed attacker during the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, moments before they were fatally shot.
According to family members, Boris Gurman (69) and his wife Sofia Gurman (61) stepped forward in an effort to protect others as chaos unfolded during the attack. The incident occurred during a public gathering marking the first day of Hanukkah.
The video shows Boris Gurman confronting one of the alleged gunmen, grappling with him and managing to take hold of the weapon. Both men fall onto the road during the struggle. Mr Gurman then stands up and appears to strike the attacker with the gun. Investigators believe the attacker then retrieved another firearm, which was used to kill the couple.
In a statement, the Gurman family described their actions as instinctive and selfless.
“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel immense pride in their courage and humanity,” the family said. “They acted without hesitation, trying to help others in the face of extreme danger.”
The couple had been married for 34 years and were longtime residents of Bondi. Boris was a retired mechanic, remembered for his generosity, calm nature, and readiness to help anyone in need. Sofia worked with Australia Post and was deeply respected by her colleagues and community.
“They lived honest, hardworking lives and treated everyone with kindness and respect,” the family added. “They were devoted to their family and to each other. Their loss has left a space that can never be filled.”
Witnesses at the scene have described Boris Gurman as a hero. The owner of the dashcam footage told reporters that he did not try to flee.
“He ran straight toward the danger,” she said. “He used all his strength to fight back. Seeing him collapse after being shot was heartbreaking.”
Another eyewitness told local media that Gurman placed himself directly in harm’s way while bullets were already being fired.
Police have officially classified the shooting as a terrorist attack aimed at the Jewish community. At least 15 people have been confirmed dead so far, with victims ranging in age from 10 to 87 years old. Those killed include a young child, a British-born rabbi, a retired police officer, and a Holocaust survivor.
Health officials say 22 people remain hospitalised, including nine in critical condition.
Earlier in the same attack, another bystander, Ahmed al Ahmed (43), was also praised for his courage after he managed to disarm one of the attackers. He was shot multiple times but survived and has since undergone surgery.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as tributes pour in for the victims and those who risked their lives to save others.
