A civilian who bravely confronted and disarmed an armed attacker during the deadly incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has been widely praised for preventing further loss of life.
Video clips shared online show a man in a white shirt running toward an armed suspect in a public car park during Sunday’s attack. The bystander, identified by Australian media as 43-year-old local fruit shop owner Ahmed Al Ahmed, is seen tackling the suspect from behind and forcefully taking away a rifle using his bare hands.
After disarming the attacker, the bystander places the weapon on the ground as the suspect retreats toward a nearby bridge, where another armed individual was reportedly present. Authorities later confirmed that one suspected gunman was killed, while another was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police are also examining whether a third attacker may have been involved.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the bystander’s actions as extraordinary, calling him “a genuine hero” and crediting his courage with saving multiple lives. Minns said the footage captured one of the most remarkable acts of bravery he had ever witnessed.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also praised the man’s actions, highlighting the courage shown by Australians who moved toward danger to protect others. He said such bravery had directly helped prevent further casualties.
Social media users across the country echoed the praise, noting that while many people flee in moments of danger, this individual chose to act, putting his own life at risk to protect strangers.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, which occurred during a public beach event linked to the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, as the community mourns those affected by the attack.
