A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, which resulted in two student deaths and injuries to nine others, according to police.
Authorities said the detained individual is in his twenties, but his identity has not yet been made public. Officials confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
The shooting took place on Saturday afternoon inside a classroom at the Holley engineering building, located on the eastern side of the university campus. University officials stated that all those killed or injured were students.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said most of the injured victims are in stable condition, with one remaining critical but stable. One injured person has already been discharged from hospital care.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said portions of the campus remain restricted while investigators continue their work. She confirmed that nearly 2,000 students were moved to secure locations overnight and thanked residents who offered shelter to those affected.
The families of the two students who lost their lives are receiving full support from the university, Paxson said, adding that no words can ease the pain of such a loss.
Earlier, police had released CCTV footage showing a man dressed in black leaving the scene. A firearm was not recovered during initial searches of the building.
The suspect was reportedly detained early Sunday morning at a hotel in Coventry, following a lead developed by local police with assistance from federal authorities. Law enforcement officials confirmed they are now focused on evidence collection and prosecution.
A community vigil is scheduled for Sunday evening as students, staff, and residents mourn the victims of the attack.
The incident adds to the growing number of mass shootings reported across the United States this year, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence on college campuses.
